  • Windbells — Our handcrafted steel windbells are made to produce deep tones and can also be used as a welcome bell at your home’s entrance. Each bell is made with a hollow chamber inside similar to an organ pipe, producing a rich, resonant sound great for anyone looking for a deeper tone than traditional wind chimes.

How to hang large outdoor wind chimes

Wind chimes can be easily installed in just a few minutes. When choosing where to hang your wind chimes, always consider the weather conditions and the chimes’ proximity to your home.

A chime placed too far from your living areas won’t have the same effect as a wind chime outside your front door or alongside your deck. We recommend placing your new wind chime near your favourite spots to unwind like the bedroom, living room or patio.

While our large and extra large wind chimes can stand up against everyday weather, always ensure your wind chimes have some kind of protection from the elements. This is essential if you live in coastal areas prone to heavy storms and high winds. When placing your wind chimes outdoors, we recommend choosing areas with covers or roofs. We suggest giving your chime plenty of space to move around so that it doesn’t knock against walls, pillars or windows when the wind picks up.

Take a look at our handy methods for installing your wind chimes at home.

  • Ceiling hooks — Ceiling hooks are a great way to keep your wind chimes secure while giving them enough space to move around without knocking other items. Ceiling hooks also provide enough support for heavy extra large wind chimes. While some ceiling hooks are directly screwed into the ceiling or ceiling beam, we recommend choosing ceiling hooks with an anchor to support heavier loads. This reduces the chance of ceiling damage and minimises the risk of your wind chime dislodging.
  • Shepherd hooks — Shepherd hooks are installed directly into the ground and are commonly used for garden features, hanging baskets and other outdoor accessories. Wind chimes are most effective in higher positions, so we recommend looking for a shepherd hook that’s tall enough to make your wind chime stand out.
  • Decorative wall-mounted brackets — Commonly used for hanging plants, a wall-mounted bracket is a sturdy option for hanging your new wind chime. They also provide more flexibility as they can be installed at almost any height on your walls. Ensure your bracket provides enough space for your chimes to sway in the breeze without knocking against the wall or any surrounding pillars.
  • Deck hooks — Deck hooks are fitted on a deck railing using clamps and are a popular choice for hanging wind chimes, plants and bird features. Always ensure your deck hook is tall enough for your wind chime before installing.

Depending on your installation method of choice, we recommend having the following tools available before attaching your wind chime.

  • A cordless drill or a screwdriver, depending on your choice of hook
  • A ladder or step ladder, depending on the height of your wall or ceiling
  • Pliers in case of any issues during the installation process

Our range of Woodstock wind chimes is easy to install and is made with durable, high-quality materials for years of use. Perfect for indoor and outdoor settings, order your new large wind chimes online today and add a touch of serenity to your home.

Your guide to cleaning large and extra large wind chimes

While Woodstock Wind Chimes are designed to stand up against everyday rain, wind and UV rays, they still need a good clean every now and then. We’ve put together a handy guide for how to clean your large and extra large wind chimes based on their material and accessories!

Before you start, make sure you have the following supplies:

  • A damp, soft cloth. For wind chimes with thicker layers of dirt or dust, we recommend using a wet paper towel to remove the top level of dirt.
  • A mild cleaning solution. You won’t need to use strong products to keep your wind chime looking good as new. We recommend mixing a small amount of mild detergent, dishwashing liquid or soap with warm water before cleaning.

For a lighter clean, use a feather duster every now and then to wipe the thin buildup of dust from the surface of your chimes. For a deep, thorough clean, we recommend using a damp cloth.

How to clean metal wind chimes

The tubes on our woodstock chimes are made with sturdy aluminium that prevents rusting in outdoor and indoor settings. However, it’s important to keep the dust, dirt and other debris from coating the interior and exterior of your tubes to avoid affecting the sound. Plus, no one wants a dusty wind chime on their deck!

Aluminium wind chimes. Aluminium is the easiest type of wind chime to clean — simply wipe the tubes with a damp cloth. Most wind chimes will only require warm water, but you can also use a mild soap and water solution for thicker patches of dirt.

Brass and copper wind chimes. Wind chimes like the Woodstock Chimes Heroic Copper Windbell need specific brass and copper cleaners to remove tarnishes without damaging the metal. Wipe your brass and copper wind chimes with the appropriate cleaning solution using a soft cloth.

How to clean wind chime accessories

Most windchimes come with expertly made accents and parts including beads, crystals, clappers, knot hooks and windcatchers. Each of these parts will require different cleaning methods.

Woodstock Windchimes make their wooden windcatchers and clappers with an eco-friendly water-based finish that can be reapplied to reduce weathering. We recommend applying a thin coat of wax or varnish once per year to prevent premature ageing.

Much like the chimes themselves, resin, glass, ceramic and plastic parts can be cleaned by wiping them with a damp cloth and a mild soap solution. For crystals, we recommend dipping them in water and allowing them to air dry outdoors

Wind chime buying guide: How to find the right sound for your home

With so many shapes, sizes and materials available for wind chimes, it’s hard to know where to start! Whether you’re looking for an outdoor statement piece or you’re creating a chime symphony in your garden, our handy wind chime buying guide will cover everything you need to know before purchasing.

    • Aluminium wind chimes. Aluminium wind chimes are the most popular chime available — for good reason! Unlike other chimes, aluminium chimes can be tuned to specific notes, which gives you more options when putting together a collection of complementary chimes. Aluminium chimes like our Amazing Grace Wind Chime can be tuned to a specific melody, so you can hear your favourite tune every time the wind blows!

Aside from their sound, aluminium wind chimes are incredibly durable and can stand up against the elements longer than other materials. While wind chimes made from glass or bamboo are typically best suited to one particular length or shape, aluminium offers the most flexibility in tone, sound and size.
    • Brass wind chimes. Brass wind chimes are another durable choice that can be tuned to specific notes. Brass has a deep, full sound, perfect for anyone looking for a richer tone.
    • Bamboo wind chimes. Bamboo chimes have a calm, relaxing sound perfect for creating zen, feng shui spaces outside. Their natural wood sound makes them the most popular choice for pools, spas, ponds and streams.

However, bamboo chimes are extremely sensitive to temperature changes, so we don’t recommend them for hot or cold climates.
    • Glass wind chimes. These delicate beauties are commonly used to create high-pitched, twinkly tones indoors. Glass can be transformed into a range of wild and wonderful colours, making this a great choice for adding some flair to your indoor styling.

While each material produces a different sound, the tone of your wind chime is determined by the length of its tubes. Wind chimes with shorter, thinner tubes produced high-pitched tones while wind chimes with longer tubes create lower, fuller-sounding tones.

    • Low tones. Choose a wind chime with long, thick tubes if you’re after rich, sustained tones. This type of tone is sometimes associated with Cathedrals and choirs.
    • Medium tones. Mid-sized wind chimes have the biggest tone variation and often include a mix of different-sized tubes for greater sound variety. Medium tones are the most common choice for wind chimes because of their classic, iconic sound.
    • High tones. While many people find high-pitched wind chimes distracting or irritating, they’re a great choice if you’re looking to create a harmonious, full-bodied sound alongside medium and large chimes. Chimes with thin, short tubes produce twinkly, sparkly sounds perfect for areas with a light breeze.

Whatever your tone of choice, we’ve got the right wind chime for your home. Order online for fast, safe delivery Australia-wide and start building your wind chime collection today!

    FAQs about large wind chimes

    When were wind chimes invented?

The first recorded evidence of wind chimes dates back to 3000 BC in China. These wind chimes were traditionally made from pottery, bamboo, shells or skulls. Metal and wood wind chimes were popularised in 1100 BC and were called “fenglings.” These new designs soon spread to Japan, the Netherlands and the rest of the world, though windchimes made from bamboo, wood and pottery are still popular today.

Wind chimes' original purpose was to ward off birds, though many historians also believe that wind chimes protected their owners from evil spirits.

Dutch traders eventually created wind chimes made from glass to get a competitive edge on the worldwide wind chime market. Glass wind chimes quickly became a symbol of wealth and luxury for collectors across the globe.

Which type of wind chime is the most durable?

All wind chimes are designed to withstand everyday weather conditions and are suitable for hanging in covered outdoor areas. If durability is your biggest concern, we recommend choosing a wind chime made with aluminium. Aluminium is more durable than materials like glass and bamboo while still being easy to clean. Aluminium wind chimes also produce stronger vibrations, allowing notes to carry further, creating a more relaxing, harmonious sound.

Aluminium is easy to make across various sizes and sound profiles, giving you more options to find the perfect sound for your patio, deck or front door.

Glass wind chimes are made with thin, delicate tubes and are the least durable type of chime. We recommend glass wind chimes for indoors or covered outdoor spaces with plenty of wind protection.

Where should I put my wind chime?

Wind chimes are generally placed near entrances, on patios, decks and in living areas. The best place to hang a wind chime depends on how airy your house is, how windy your front or back garden is and how loud you want your wind chimes to be.

We recommend experimenting by placing your wind chimes in various spots around your home.

Where should I avoid hanging a wind chime?

Always avoid putting your wind chime too close to your neighbour's house. While we love the sound of wind chimes at all times of day, a loud wind chime could annoy your neighbours — especially if it's close to quiet, intimate areas like bedrooms and home offices.

It’s important to ensure your windchime is always placed on a secure, stable wall or ceiling. For large wind chimes, test the hook to make sure it can support the full weight of your chime.

How do I keep my wind chime safe during bad weather?

Wind chimes are built to withstand daily weather conditions including wind, rain and harsh sunlight. However, it’s important to move your wind chime indoors or to covered areas during harsh weather. Here are some tips for keeping your wind chime safe, whatever the weather.

    • Heavy rain. Most wind chimes can withstand heavy rain without damage and will naturally air dry once conditions clear. However, glass wind chimes shouldn’t be left outside during heavy rain. Wooden wind chimes can also develop mould if they’re left in the rain for days or weeks, so we recommend moving them indoors or to a covered spot.
    • Windy conditions. Always move your wind chimes indoors or to an area with plenty of shelter when the wind gets too strong. Your wind chimes could be damaged if their tubes begin knocking against each other or walls, pillars and other hanging items during high winds.
    • Cold weather. While aluminium wind chimes are tough against cold weather, we recommend keeping your wind chimes indoors during winter to prevent frost from forming and damaging the tubes. This is especially important for bamboo chimes, as their natural materials are vulnerable to temperature changes.
    • Summer. Keep your wind chimes in the shade during summer. Harsh sunlight can cause your chimes to age and deteriorate faster than usual.
